Sun and water are two of the most important ingredients for a healthy lawn.
While you can’t control the sun, you can provide the water. Whether you’re
planting new seed or just maintaining your existing lawn, make sure that your
lawn gets the right amount of water.
Planning Lawn Watering
Your lawn requires water to grow healthy. If you haven’t done so yet, refer to
the other videos and printable instructions in the Spring Lawn Maintenance
series on how to prep the soil, fertilize, and seed your lawn. They’re available

Some towns have watering restrictions, so be sure to follow any local ordinances.
In addition, consider using waterwise landscape techniques offered in videos
and instructions on the Lowe’s website.

watering your lawn:

Flexible hoses and sprinklers are
sufficient for watering many lawns.
However, they require that you move the
equipment on and off the lawn each time
you water and sometimes during the
watering process for thorough coverage.

 |
In-ground watering lines can reduce the labor
involved in watering, but require that you install
(or have installed) the underground water pipes
and surface sprinkler heads in your lawn.
|
Flexible hose and in-ground sprinkler systems
can be installed with timers that will turn on
and off the water flow as desired.
|

Select sprinklers first. Make sure that the sprinklers selected offer full and balanced coverage
so that all areas of the lawn get an even distribution of water.

Oscillating sprinklers work for large, mostly flat lawns. Walking sprinklers which guide
themselves along a hose, are ideal for watering areas with turns or hills.
New seed should be watered lightly every day until the grass is established.
Existing lawns should get about 1" of water once a week. Using a rain gauge can help
you plan your watering to supplement any rain. Some types of lawn grasses require
more or less water, so ask a Lowe’s associate or lawn professional for guidance.
Select hoses to connect each of the selected sprinklers. Hoses are typically sold in 25', 50', 75' and 100' sections. Hoses
come in various diameters with ¾" and 5/8" the most common sizes for lawns and gardens. The bigger the diameter, the
more water will be delivered. Select hoses with easy-to-twist couplings.
Water early in the morning, just before sunrise. This gives your lawn time to absorb the water without the excess evaporation
that’s caused by mid-day sun. A timer is a good investment.
Avoid watering late at night, as this could promote diseases.
Consistency is key: stay ahead of dry spells to keep your yard healthy and beautiful.
- Water more frequently during dry spells.
