Slate Solution

Natural materials have universal appeal.

You can mix and match colors and sizes to suit your space and style. Experiment with patterns using a selection of mosaic, rectangular, and square tiles. Here, multicolored slate tiles with a subtle copper sheen coordinate with the poppy red cabinets.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • If you have pre-existing tile, use a hammer and chisel to remove it. Be sure to remove any switch plates or outlet covers, as well. Remember to cover the countertop with a  dropcloth, and always wear gloves and safety glasses when breaking tiles. When you are finished, clean the area with soap and water.

  • Estimate the amount of tile you will need to purchase by creating a template. Start by measuring the area you plan to cover. Cut templates for each tile size that you plan to use from a sheet of contractor’s paper. Arrange the templates in an area that is one square foot in size.  Count the amount of each tile used in this pattern and multiply these numbers by the linear footage of your space. This will give you the amount of tile that you will need to complete the project.

  • Before you begin the installation, cut a sheet of contractor’s paper to the size of your backsplash. Create a unique pattern by trying different combinations of mosaics within the space. Doing this before you attaching it to the wall will give you an idea of the overall color variations and how the different sizes work together across the board.

  • If you need to create different size tiles to accommodate your space, use tile nippers to cut each piece to size.

  • When you are satisfied with your pattern, spread a thick layer of mastik on the wall area, and begin attaching the tiles. Allow to set completely.

  • To create even grout lines, place spacers at each point where adjacent tiles meet.

  • Use a flat-edge tool, such as a putty knife or 5-in-1, to remove any excess mastik.

  • Wipe the surface clean with a wet sponge before applying the grout.

  • Apply grout using a trowel, making sure to force the grout into all exposed joints. Remember to wear gloves during this process.

  • Once all of the grout has been applied, use a sponge and soapy water to remove any excess before it starts to set. Clean the entire surface, and then allow the grout to set.

  • Use a foam brush to apply a stone enhancer, which brings out the vibrant colors in the varying tiles. This will also seal the tile.
