Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit. Note: This project is designed for a window measuring 32 inches at the widest point of the trim. Adjust the dimensions as needed.

1 Create the box assembly.

a. Cut the 1 x 6 to 36 1/2 inches long, set the table saw blade at 45 degrees, and rip cut to create the (01) cleat and (02) back rail.

b. Rip cut the (01) cleat to 1 11/16 inches, cutting on the flat side. Then cut it to 35 1/2 inches long. Set aside the (01) cleat to be used later for installing the cornice.

c. Using glue and pocket hole screws, attach the (02) back rail to the (03) ends as shown in Figure 1.

d. Attach the (04) front to the (03) ends using glue and pocket hole screws.

2 Attach the crown moulding parts.

a. Insert the (05) front crown parts into the crown corner pieces as shown in Figure 2. Test-fit with the front of the box assembly as shown in Figure 3. Adjust the length of the (05) front crown if needed.

b. Insert the (06) end crown part into the crown corner pieces, test-fit, and adjust the length if needed.

c. Remove the (05) front crown and (06) end crown parts from the crown corners, apply glue, and reassemble.

d. Position the box assembly on a flat work surface. Apply glue to the lower back edge of the crown assembly, and position it flush with the box assembly as shown in Figure 3.

e. Secure the (05) front crown, (06) end crown, and crown corner pieces to the box assembly using 1-inch wire brads.

3 Attach the base cap and corner moulding parts.

a. Scribe to fit and miter cut the (07) front corner and (08) end corner pieces for the lower edges of the box assembly as shown in Figure 4. Attach using glue and 3/4-inch wire brads.

b. Scribe to fit and miter cut the (09) front base cap and (10) end base cap pieces positioned flush with the corner moulding parts as shown in Figure 5. Position the thinner edge of the base cap moulding flush with the corner moulding, and attach using glue and 1-inch wire brads.

4 Apply finishing touches.

a. Fill all holes, sand, prime, and paint.

b. Using a pencil, lightly mark the position of the wall studs or header above the window.

c. Position the (01) cleat, with the angled edge pointing away from the wall, flush with the top window trim. Make sure that the (01) cleat is level and centered with the window. Scribe the position of the studs on the (01) cleat.

d. Predrill countersunk holes for the 3-inch screws on the scribed lines and centered on the face of the (01) cleat.

e. Reposition the (01) cleat flush with the top window trim and level, and attach to the wall studs using 3-inch screws. f. Install the cornice centered on the (01) cleat.
