Table Saw Storage Table

This shop project is both an outfeed table and a place to store blades and other tools.

Not only can a storage table help prevent table saw accidents and increase accuracy by supporting your workpiece, it also offers much needed storage. All the drawers (including the vertical blade storage) slide out on full-extension slides. And the tabletop is adjustable to match the height of your saw’s top.

Instructions:

General: Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

1 Assemble the face frames.

Note: Our storage table is designed for a table saw that measures 37 3/4 inches from the tabletop to the floor. To fit your saw, adjust the length of the (01) stiles.

a. Following the layout in Figure 1, construct the front and back face frames with glue and pocket hole joinery. The front face frame is built using the (01) stiles, (02) rails, a (03) mid stile, and (04) mid rails. The back face frame is built using only the (01) stiles and (02) rails.

2 Build the body assembly.
a. Position the (05) sides flush with the bottom and outer edges of the face frames as shown in Figure 2. Attach using glue and pockethole screws.

b. Position a (06) floor/top flush with the top edges of the (02) rails as shown in Figure 2. Attach using glue and pocket hole screws.

c. Flip the assembly upside down. With glue and nails, attach two (07) caster blocks to each corner of the (06) floor/top as shown in Figure 2.

d. Attach the casters so that they are flush with the outside edge and ends of the assembly.

3 Add the divider, glide supports, and shelf.

a. Position the (08) divider between the (05) sides using a (09) glide support as a spacer as shown in Figure 3. Attach the (08) divider using glue and nails.

b. Position six (09) glide supports flush with the inside and bottom edges of the front face frame as shown in Figure 3.

c. Using pocket hole screws only for the blade drawer, install the remaining (09) glide support centered and flush with the top of the opening as shown in Figure 3. This will allow you to make adjustments later as needed.

d. Cut the (10) shelf to fit the opening, and attach it to the (08) divider and back face frame using glue and nails at the desired height.

4 Add the drawers and tops.

a. Assemble the blade drawer with glue and nails by attaching the (11) blade top/bottom to the ends of the (12) blade ends with the (13) blade divider centered between them as shown in Figure 4.

b. Assemble the top, middle, and lower drawer boxes by attaching the ends to the sides with glue and nails. Attach a bottom to each drawer box with glue and nails. Note: Parts (15) through (21) are used in this step.

c. Attach the drawer glides following the manufacturer's directions; install the drawers in the openings.

d. Cut the drawer faces 1/4 inch wider and taller than the openings as shown in the drawer face construction in Figure 4. Note: Parts (22) through (24) are used in this step.

e. Miter cut and attach 3/8-inch x 3/4-inch banding to cover the plywood edges of the drawer faces as shown in Figure 4. Cut 3/8- inch x 3/4-inch handles, and attach them to the drawer faces with glue and nails Note: The banding and handles are cut from leftover 1
x 4 stock.

f. Center the drawer faces over the drawer openings and attach the drawer faces to the drawer boxes by driving 1-inch screws from the drawer fronts into the back of the drawer faces.

g. Attach the remaining (06) floor/top to the assembly so that its top is flush with the top edges of the face frames.

h. Attach the (25) sub top to the (05) sides using glue and nails as shown in Figure 4.

5 Create the final assembly.

a. Cut four 2 3/4-inch-long pieces of the 5/16-inch threaded rod.

b. Secure a 5/16-inch bar knob to one end of each rod piece using epoxy.

c. Locate holes on the (25) sub top for 5/16-inch threaded inserts, making sure there is sufficient clearance to turn the knobs.

d. Drill the holes for the threaded inserts, and install them with the nuts in the (25) sub top.

e. Attach the (26) edge banding to the (27) top with glue and nails.

f. Cut strips of oversized plastic laminate, and attach them to the (26) edge banding with contact cement; trim off the excess with a router fitted with a flush trim bit.

g. Cut an oversized piece of plastic laminate to cover the (27) top, and attach it with contact cement; trim off the excess with a router fitted with a flush trim bit.

h. Drill 1/2-inch-diameter countersunk holes 3/8 inch deep centeredin each (28) alignment block.

i. Thread the threaded rod through the (25) sub top and into the stopped holes in the (28) alignment blocks.

j. Apply glue to the tops of the (28) alignment blocks, and set the top assembly on them, overhanging the base assembly equally on all sides.

k. Let the glue dry; remove the top assembly and secure the (28) alignment blocks to the top assembly with screws; then reposition the top assembly on the base assembly.

6 Add finishing touches.

a. Fill all holes, sand the project smooth, and apply polyurethane.

b. Roll the table in place behind your table saw, and adjust the height of the top so that its edge is just below the top of the table saw. Then lock the casters in place.
