Art Deco Vanity Dresser

Incorporate a popular design style with this curvaceous period piece.

Instructions:
General: Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

1 Build the cabinet side frames.
a. Using glue and pocket hole screws, build four cabinet side frames by attaching the (01) cabinet side rails to the (02) cabinet side stiles as shown in Figure 1.
b. Cut a 2 1/4-inch-radius quarter circle on the top front corners of the (02) cabinet side stiles as shown in Figure 1.
c. Using a router fitted with a 1/4-inch roundover bit and placed in a router table, cut a roundover on each side of the top and front frame edges without following the radius but continuing along the straight sides of the edges.
d. Using a router fitted with a 1/4-inch rabbeting bit, cut a 1/4-inch-deep rabbet along the interior perimeter of each frame. Use a chisel to square the rounded portions of the rabbet at each corner.
e. Scribe to fit each (03) cabinet panel; attach the panels to the frames using glue and 3/4-inch brads.

a. Position the upper (04) cabinet back rail 1 1/4 inches down from the top edge of each frame and flush with the back as shown in Figure 2. Attach using glue and 4d nails.
b. Position the lower (04) cabinet back rail flush with the bottom and back of the frame. Attach using glue and 4d nails.
c. Position the (05) cabinet front rail 1/2 inch from the front edge of the frame and flush with the bottom as shown in Figure 2. Attach using glue and 4d nails.
d. Using glue and 1 1/4-inch brads, attach the (06) cabinet top cleats, (07) cabinet front cleats, and (08) drawer support cleats to the frames as shown in Figure 3.
e. Attach the (09) drawer supports to the (08) drawer support cleats using glue and 1-inch brads.

3 Add the cabinet waterfalls.
a. Cut each (10) cabinet waterfall per the Cut List.
b. Using a table saw and a dado blade, cut a 4 1/8-inch-wide x 1/4-inch-deep dado 13 7/8 inches from one end as shown in Figure 4.
c. In the dado area, cut kerfs that reach slightly into the last ply before the veneer and spaced 1/8 inch apart, as shown in Figure 4.
d. Attach the (10) cabinet waterfall to the upper (04) cabinet back rail, (06) cabinet top cleats, and (07) cabinet front cleats using glue and 1 1/4-inch brads as shown in Figure 4.

4 Add the cabinet fronts.
a. Scribe to fit each (11) cabinet front, cut the drawer openings per Figure 5, and attach to the (07) cabinet front cleats and (08) drawer support cleats using glue and 1 1/4-inch brads.
b. Scribe to fit each (12) cabinet front trim, and attach to the cabinet assembly to cover the seam at the top and bottom of the (11) cabinet front.

5 Build the drawers, and make the drawer pulls.
a. Using a router fitted with a 1/4-inch rabbeting bit, cut a 1/4-inch-deep rabbet on one edge of each (13) drawer back and (14) drawer side.
b. Attach the (13) drawer backs to the (14) drawer sides using glue and 1-inch brads.
c. Position the (15) drawer bottoms in the rabbet in the back/side assembly, and attach using glue and 3/4-inch brads.
d. Using a router fitted with a 1/4-inch roundover bit, cut a roundover on each front edge of the (16) drawer fronts.
e. Attach the (16) drawer fronts to the drawer assemblies using glue and 4d finishing nails.
f. Use the remaining 1 x 8 stock to create the (17) drawer pulls. Cut a 2 1/4-inch radius at each corner of the stock as shown in the drawer pull detail in Figure 6. Scribe a mark 2 3/8 inches from each corner, and scribe a straight line between those marks.
g. Using a router fitted with a 1/4-inch roundover bit and placed in a router table, cut a roundover on each side and the top and bottom edges of the stock without following the radius but continuing along the straight sides of the edges.
h. Using a miter saw, cut along the line scribed in Step 5f to remove each corner piece.

6 Join the cabinets. Attach the center waterfall and assembly back.
a. Position the upper (18) center back rail 2 3/4 inches down from the top edge of each cabinet side frame and flush with the back as shown in Figure 7. Attach using glue and pocket hole screws.
b. Position the lower (18) center back rail flush with the bottom and back of the cabinet side frames. Attach using glue and pocket hole screws.
c. Position the (19) center front rail 1 1/4 inches from the front edge and 3 3/4 inches down from the top edge of the cabinet side frames. Attach using glue and pocket hole screws.
d. Position the (20) center cleats flush with the top edge of the upper (18) center back rail as shown in Figure 7, and attach to the (03) cabinet panels using glue and 1-inch brads.
e. Create the (21) center waterfall following Steps 3b–c. Note: The (21) center waterfall is 20 inches wide.
f. Attach the (21) center waterfall to the upper (18) center back rail, (20) center cleats, and (19) center front rail using glue and 1 1/4-inch brads (see Figure 8).
g. Scribe to fit, and attach the (22) mirror rail to the cabinet side frames using glue and pocket hole screws.
h. Attach the (23) assembly back to the vanity assembly using glue and 4d nails.

7 Create the mirror assembly, and attach to the vanity assembly.
a. Lay out and cut the (24) mirror back as shown in Figure 9.
b. Position the mirror centered on the (24) mirror back and 3 inches up from the bottom edge as shown in Figure 9. Attach the mirror to the (24) mirror back using Mirror Mastic and mirror mounting tape.
c. Cut a 2 1/4-inch radius at one corner of each (25) inside mirror panel, (26) center mirror panel, and (27) outside mirror panel.
d. Sand and stain the (25) inside mirror panels, (26) center mirror panels, and (27) outside mirror panels with Cabot Gunstock stain before assembly. Allow to dry.
e. Position the panels as shown in Figure 9, and attach the parts to the (24) mirror back using glue. Clamp in place, and allow glue to dry.

8 Apply finishing touches.
a. Fill all holes, and sand smooth.
b. Apply Cabot Red Mahogany stain to the edges of the cabinet frames, drawers, and drawer pulls.
c. Apply Cabot Gunstock stain to the remainder of the vanity assembly.
d. Apply one coat of polyurethane, allow to dry, and sand with fine-grit sandpaper.
e. Apply another coat of polyurethane, allow to dry, and apply coats of paste wax to reach the desired luster.
f. Attach the mirror assembly to the vanity assembly using 1 1/4-inch screws where the mirror assembly meets the (02) cabinet side stiles and (04) cabinet back rails; use 1-inch screws where the mirror assembly meets the (22) mirror rail.
