 Paint Treatment from Bedroom Makeover
Step-by-Step
  1. Use painter’s tape to protect the crown moulding, baseboard, and adjacent walls. Paint the wall with the basecoat color, which should be lighter than the accent colors, and allow to dry. (We used Polished Ivory as our basecoat.)
  2. Paint Treatment Step 2 Measure the wall’s width and its height from the crown moulding to the baseboard (or the height from the ceiling to the floor if there is no moulding). Using these measurements, determine on paper how many squares and/or rectangles will fit into the space and how they will be arranged. (Our wall measured 162 inches wide and 90 inches high, and we used 18-inch squares and 18- x 36-inch rectangles positioned vertically and horizontally.)
TIP: For a random look, plot the squares and rectangles in various sizes and configurations; for a simplified, uniform look, divide the wall into rows and columns and plot the squares or rectangles in a grid-like manner. Use a tape measure, straightedge, pencil, and level to draw the shapes onto the wall.
  3. In a pail, mix one cup of leftover basecoat paint with one cup of latex glaze. Repeat with the accent colors, again using equal parts paint and glaze. (We used Chantarelle and Khaki as our accent colors.)
  4. Paint Treatment Step 4 Mix half a cup of the lightest paint color (Polished Ivory) with half a cup of the second lightest (Chantarelle), and add a cup of glaze. Next, mix half a cup of the second-lightest paint with half a cup of the darkest color (Khaki), and add a cup of glaze. You now have five shades of glaze.
  5. Use painter’s tape to outline a third of the squares and rectangles, selecting shapes that are not adjacent.
  6. Paint Treatment Step 6For the first taped-off shape, choose a shade of glaze and use a paintbrush to apply patternless vertical and horizontal brushstrokes. Wipe brush with a damp cloth. While this glaze is still wet, dip the brush in another shade of glaze, and gently drag it through the first color, using patternless horizontal and vertical strokes. Wipe the brush with a damp cloth, and then repeat with another shade of glaze to create a linen-weave look.
  7. Repeat Step 6 in the other taped-off squares and rectangles, using various combinations of three to four shades of glaze per shape. Remember to wipe the brush after every color change. For the taped-off shapes against the wall’s borders, make sure the last brush drag is parallel to and against the edges of the wall and/or moulding for a clean look. When finished, allow all paint to dry completely.
  8. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 with another third of the squares and rectangles. When they are dry, repeat Steps 5 through 7 with the remaining shapes to complete the wall.
