General Instructions

Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

  1. Build the foundation/floor panel assembly.
    • Attach the (01) foundation boards to the (02) crosspieces using glue and 3-inch screws as shown in Figure 1.
    • Turn the grooved side of the (03) floor panel face down, and attach it to the foundation assembly with glue and 1 5/8-inch screws.
  2. Attach the corners and side panels.
    • Cut a 14-degree angle on the top end of the (04) front corner supports and (05) back corner supports.
    • Referring to the (06) side panel detail, cut a 14-degree angle along the top edges to provide the proper slope for the roof.
    • Trace an outline of the automatic foundation vents onto the (06) side panels, and cut them out with a jigsaw.
    • Attach the (04) front corner supports and the (05) back corner supports to the (06) side panels using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws, making sure the top of the supports are flush with the tops of the (06) side panels. Note: The (06) side panels extend 5/8 inch past the bottom edge of the supports so that the (03) floor panel is concealed.
    • Attach the support/side panel assemblies to the foundation/floor panel assembly using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws as shown in Figure 2.
  3. Attach the front and back panels.
    • Using a jigsaw, cut an opening in the (07) front panel for the pet door per the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Attach the (07) front panel and the (08) back panel to the front and back corner supports using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws as shown in Figure 3.
  4. Add the cleats, canopy, canopy supports, vents, and pet door.
    • Attach the (09) cleats to the (07) front panel using construction adhesive and wire brads (see Figure 4).
    • Referring to the (10) canopy support detail, cut a 6-inch radius on the bottom end of the (10) canopy supports and a 14-degree slope along the top end. Attach the (10) canopy supports to the (09) cleats with construction adhesive and wire brads.
    • Attach the (11) canopy to the (10) canopy supports with glue and wire brads. Adjust the length of the (11) canopy as needed to accommodate the pet door.
    • Apply a bead of caulk to the joint between the (11) canopy and the (07) front panel.
    • Attach the automatic foundation vents, and install the pet door per the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Attach the roof and trim.
    • Attach the (12) roof panel to the assembly with glue and 1 5/8-inch screws so that it overhangs the (07) front panel and (06) side panels by 3/4 inch. Drive the screws through the (12) roof panel into the (04) front corner supports and (05) back corner supports.
    • Scribe and cut the (13) barge boards to length with a 14-degree cut on each end. Attach the (13) barge boards to the (06) side panels with glue and wire brads (see Figure 5).
    • Scribe and cut the (14) fascia boards to length. Attach them to the (07) front panel and (08) back panel with glue and wire brads.
  6. Apply finishing touches.
    • Fill all holes with stainable wood filler, sand, prime, and paint. Allow to dry.
    • Attach the asphalt shingles to the (12) roof panel using construction adhesive. Do not use roofing nails-they can penetrate the (12) roof panel and may be dangerous for your pet.

2 things to make it better for the dog and owner. 1) (dog) Put in a 1' long wall inside to the left of the door to reduce wind and wind-driven precip. 2) (owner) Build in or attach 3 2"x2" rafters to the roof on each end and the middle, then set the roof on top of the wall, draw the wall lines on the underside of the roof. Then, allowing no more than 1/8" attach either a 1"x1" or a 1" quarter-round trim on the underside of the roof to stop drafts. Attach the roof using large hook-n-eyes.
