Step-by-Step Instructions
Mosaic Tile Trivets

General: To create four 12-inch-square trivets, cut the plywood into four equal squares. For four 6-inch-square trivets, cut the 1/2- x 6-inch board into four equal squares. A Lowe's employee can cut the wood for you; there's no charge for the first two cuts.

  1. Mosaic Tile TrivetsPlace your tiles in a plastic bag, and wrap it with a drop cloth. Use a hammer to break the tiles into pieces. Be careful of sharp edges.
  2. Mosaic Tile TrivetsUse the broken tile pieces to create a pattern on your piece of wood. Once you are satisfied with the design, use a glue gun to attach the tiles to the wood.
  3. Mosaic Tile TrivetsWear gloves to work with the grout. Dip a trowel or margin float into the premixed sanded grout, and smear a thick layer across your design. Wipe off excess, and wait 10 minutes. Run the trowel over the top of the tiles to remove any excess grout. Then, gently run a damp sponge in one direction over the top of the trivet to clean it. Use a towel or rag to remove any remaining grout. It will take the grout approximately 24 hours to fully set, so your guests may need to place their new trivet on a piece of newspaper or cardboard for the trip home.
  4. Mosaic Tile TrivetsOnce the trivet is completely dry, attach felt pads to the underside to protect your countertops.
