Wall-Mounted Shelf

Build a simple display shelf that’s strong enough to hold a flat-panel television and versatile enough to hang anywhere.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1. From each pine board, cut two 10" sides/partitions and one 48"-long top/bottom parts.

Good to Know:

Measure and cut carefully to make all the 10" pieces exactly equal in length. Do the same for the top and bottom boards.

Step 2. Measure and mark the two partition locations on the inside faces of the top and bottom. Without gluing, assemble all the parts with clamps. Drill two countersunk pilot holes at each joint and unclamp the parts.

Step 3. Sand the faces of each part with 120-grit sandpaper. Screw the two L-brackets to the underside of the top 1" from both ends. (It’s a lot easier now rather than after assembly.) Glue and clamp the top and bottom to the sides and partitions. Then reinforce the assembly with countersunk screws.

Step 4. Cover the screw heads with wood filler and let it dry. Then sand the surfaces and edges smooth.

Step 5. To paint, first apply one coat of primer and sand it smooth. Then apply two coats of paint. Using a level, mark the mounting hole locations on a wall and add wall anchors as needed.

Good to Know:

If possible, screw one of the brackets into a wall stud using #8 x 1-1/2" screws. Then fasten the other side using wall anchors.
